Rep. Dillmore:
I certainly concur with your position. I would only add that I can't imagine what would require a full semester of financial literacy education. Many schools have 20-30 minutes for meeting with advisors/sponsors DAILY. Perhaps there is already time in the school day to add 8-10 hours of education? Technical education curricula already includes financial literacy. I would also suggest education for parents ... kids, unfortunately, model what they learn at home. Over the course of my career, I have 18 years in public education ... but I have that same number of years in the private industry sector. I think my idea isn't unique! Best Wishes ... on bringing some sanity to this legislative session.

I support liquor sales in grocery stores. I don't drink often but sometimes I need wine for cooking and to have to make a separate trip to a liquor store is extremely inconvenient. I have lived most of my adult life in states that sold alcohol in the grocery store and it does not make people drink more or contribute to underage drinking, or hurt liquor stores sales. The comments others have made are based on unfounded fears.

I think people get confused by "religious freedom". It means you are free to practice your religion, not free to impose your religious beliefs on others. So if you run a pharmacy serving the public you do NOT have the right to decide someone cannot have birth control pills - that is their decision, not yours. Your religious belief in this case is irrelevant. Religious freedom is as much about our freedom FROM other people's religion as it is about practicing our own. I just wrote a column on this that will be appearing in the Pittsburg Morning Sun this week.

I find this bill, “Religious Freedom Restoration Act”, laughable just by its name alone. First of all, I did not know I lost my constitutional right to freely practice my religious faith or veneration. Second, the words freedom and restoration make no sense unless you look at it in the context of the Republican’s quest for absolute political power at all levels of government. I have heard over and over the need for small government, yet they continue to aspire to control the lives of the middle class and the poor through various tactics including religious doctrine and dogma from the fringe right. The unintended or intended consequences may be a continuation of the denigration of certain classes of citizens as has been the goals Phelps family as well as the privacy of individuals as currently protected by the constitution

Someone in the Kansas house and Senate needs to come up with a plan that doesn't include robbing peter to pay pall. I don't see solutions just more of the same. Kicking the can down the road. It is time for the people of Kansas to get a bang for their buck or those in office need to be removed and replaced with those that have good workable solutions not more of the same.

This is clearly another overstep. The Constitution says what it says regarding religion. I don't think it is necessary to say more. I also tend to agree regarding the Westboro Baptist Church and the Phelps family.

In this highly divisive world, it would seem that the addition of an invitation for more and better lawsuits is not precisely what will pour oil on troubled waters.

Dear Nile: please oppose HB 2260. This should be called the "Fred Phelps Protection Act." On its face, it would allow a person to obtain an injunction against the enforcement of any law or ordinance as long as the person claims that the law interferes with their religious beliefs. Just imagine the fun that the Phelps family could have with this one.
It also appears to expressly allow discrimination, if purportedly based on religious belief.

Also, any bill that confuses religious tenets with "tenants" (page 1, line 31) does not deserve to be seriously considered.

Well, Nile, you know how to say enough without overstepping the rules of civility. Mr. Brownback has certainly been away from Kansas too long, and, I must admit, many of us are glad of it. I confess that I would like to be in a situation where I could say, once again, and with real truth: "May God bless and keep Sam Browback -- far away from us."
